The Greatest Doctor of All

My Thoughts About Langston Hughes

The Greatest Doctor of All

By: Keonia Hall, 8th grade, Washington D.C.

Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was the first black man to perform the first successful human heart operation at Provident Hospital in Chicago on July 9, which occurred in 1893. Not only was he the first successful black American surgeon, in 1891 he also helped found Provident Hospital. This is important because the growing black community could receive care and so black Americans could be more successful throughout life. In 1913 doctor Williams left, and the hospital fell into some financial difficulties, which forced them to close in 1987. By Dr. William's successful attempt at heart surgery, he has made it possible for many of the heart transplants today.

My Thoughts About Langston Hughes

By: Lu'Quelle Tyler, Washington, D.C.

Langston Hughes is a wonderful inspiration to kids of many ages and even adults. The reason why he is such a good inspiration is because he was among the most talented black writers during the Harlem Renaissance. And also, because of the great things he did like, winning the Spingarn Medal, which was for his outstanding contribution to the field of literature. While he was working in a hotel in Washington D.C., he met a known poet named Vachel Lindsay. In 1926 with the help of Vachel Lindsay, he published his first book of poems. It was called The Weary Blues. The reason why he is so important to me is because of his writing and his poetry. Here is how he has inspired me:

Langston Hughes is a man of blues.
A man of blues was Langston Hughes.
He was a perfect writer, and a Human Rights fighter.
He is great to every boy and girl,
In the whole wide world.
