Activities at Beacon House

AFTER SCHOOL STUDY HALL
Monday-Thursday, 3.30- 6.00, all ages @ Beacon House
Volunteers and staff provide one to one, as well as group tutoring and homework assistance to the youth. Age appropriate curriculum and educational excecises will be provided to each participant.

PROJECT NORTHSTAR
Monday or Tuesday, 6.30-8.00 pm, grades k-12, @ Beacon House
Volunteers provide homework and tutoring assistance in on-one sessions. Youth are also provided a snack. Previously this program was conducted off site, but this year project northstar will be conducted at Beacon House. Youth may attend one session per week, either Monday or Tuesday. Contact Toddre Monier at (202) 223-0144 to become a volunteer.

PEOPLE- ANIMALS-LOVE (PAL)
Monday-Friday, 5.00- 6.30 pm, ages 8-12, @ Beacon House
PAL is an onsite program where the children learn Hands on how to care for animals. PAL participants learn to explore animal environments through the World Wide Web and gain a quest for knowledge.

CPDC COMPUTER CLASS
Monday-Thursday, 5.00 - 6.00 pm, Grades K-7, @ Gateway
Computer classes and projects empahsize skill building in developmental competencies, computer/network competencies, and advanced technical skill. Skill building is accomplished using educationally interactive software, interactive online wev sites, desktop publishing software, and on-to-one tutoring. Project-based classes will build upon the skill-based classes to concentrate on intensive and in-depth projects that focus on a variety of issues.

DANCE PLACE "AFRICAN DANCE" AND MODERN DANCE
Friday, 4.00-5.00, ages 8-18, @ Beacon House
Dance Place, the renowned dance studio on 8th & Monroe, NE will provide an "African Dance" and "Modern DAnce" class this fall at Beachon House. By utilising perceptual motor learning techniques along with creative movement, Dance Place seeks to teach young persons the art of dance and improve self-esteem and self-confidence.

GIRL SCOUTS
Friday, 5.00-6.00, all ages, @ Beacon House
Girl Scouts meet once a week on Friday. Girls of all ages participate in activities that stimulate learning, enhance self-esteem, and offer opportunities for a variety of experiences.

SATURDAY ARTS AND CRAFTS
Saturday, 10.00-11.30 am, all ages, @ Beacon House
Arts and Crafts provides opportunities for youth that stress creativity, learning and education in a fun environment. Volunteers from different metropolitan area Unitarial Universalist (UU) churches along with Beacon House Participate each Saturday Morning. Arts & Crafts served as a weekend activity for children that bring together youth and adults from the UU churches with children from the Edgewood and Brookland neighbourhoods.

READING FALCONS
Saturday 11.30- 1.00, other times, all ages @ Beacon House
The Reading Falcons gather once a week to attend field trips to the library and to read. The Goal of the program is for "Each participant to read a million words". This program is runu in partnership with the UU churches and volunteers.

SATURDAY MATH ACADEMY
Saturday 11.30-1.00 @ Beacon House
The Saturday Math Academy provides youth with supplemental mathematics training that reinforces the concepts students learn in school in a fun, positive environment. Youth work with positive adult rol models many of who work in the mathematics field, to gain a "living knowledge" of mathematics and how math concepts transfer to real life situations.

FALCONS ATHLETIC AND RECREATION TEAMS
Various times, all ages, @ Beacon House
á Football á Basketball á Cheerleading Through organized sports teams, Beacon House provided opportunities for youth of both genders to participate in recreational teams that teach concentration, discipline, and sportsmanship to the participants. Sports team included football, basketball, cheerleading, and baseball. All sports team participants are required to attend academic programs including After School Hall and maintain no less than a 2.0 grade point average. The Falcons- the name of all Beacon House teams- stands for: Family Academica achievement Leadership Commitments to community Organisation Networking Sportsmanship.

BOYS, GIRLS AND TEEN MENTORING GROUPS
Falcon Boys RAP Session , Monday, 6.30 @ Beacon House
Teen Girls Mentoring Groups, 14-10, Wednesday, 7.00-8.00, @ Beacon House Girls Mentoring group, 11-13, Wednesday, 6.30-7.30, @ Beacon House Staff from the Edgewood/ Brookland Family Support Collaborative and other program mentoring group at Beacon House one evening per week. Groups are led by licensed social workers, social work interns, and youth workers. Topics include self esteem, anger management, peer pressure, relationships, violence and drugs and school achievement.

GED, PROJECT NORTHSTAR
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, age 16 and up, 4.30 pm, @ extra office
Individualized GED instruction is provided by two instructors.
