CPDC

Mission: Develop vibrant communities through innovation and partnerhips
Founded in 1989, Community Preservation and Development Corporation (CPDC) is a non-profit real-estate company committed to the preservation of affordable housing in the Mid-Atlantic region. CPDC is a leader in the affordable housing industry. Traditionally, the focus of affordable housing has been on bricks and mortar, concrete and steel. CPDC understands that true profit/loss lies not merely in the physical structure of a building, but also in the lives of those living there. CPDC develops communities!
CPDC believes that a sustainable community depends upon a safe environment where residents have the opportunity to prosper and to fully participate in the economic mainstream. CPDC has chosen to make investments that seek a different sort of dividend. CPDC invests in people, as well as in real estate. Visit the CPDC web-site at www.cpdc.org .

Buckman Road

Threatened with being transformed into market rate housing in affluent Fairfax County, the Buckman Road Apartments were acquired by CPDC under the Low-Income Housing Preservation and Resident Homeownership Act of 1990 (LIHPRHA) in 1996. LIHPRHA was enacted to preserve affordable housing built 20 or more years earlier under several US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs. Located on the route 1 corridor in Alexandria, VA, Buckman Road is a diverse international community made up of residents for more than ten nations. Buckman Road offers both adult career training and several youth after school programs to residents and surrounding community.

CEP Programs

Through a partnership with Fairfax County government, Fairfax County Public Schools and The George Washington University's graduate programs in School Counseling and Vocational Evaluation, CPDC operates a year long career exploration program (CEP) for youth 15 - 21 that are in the prcess of making critical decisions about their future (careers, post-secondary education, etc.). The program offers a 10 week career development course resulting in improved knowledge of self and careers, a career action plan, and an electronic career portfolio. Youth also receive one year of support and monitoring of progress on their action plans.

The program is designed to help individuals discover their unique skills, strengths and positive qualities through career assessment activities; provide an opportunity to explore of the many career options available and to develop action plans to achieve educational, career and personal goals.

During the program youth are guided through the three phases of career development as recommended by The National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee (NOICC), 1993. The program is also aligned with National Career Development Competencies.
